Block 2

Spiral Scrappy Improv Block

Let’s try a more advanced block.

For block 2 you can use leftover jellyroll pieces, or strips from your scrap bin.

Step 1
Cut center polygon

Remember math? A polygon is a shape with 3 or more sides. 5 is a good number. Cut a shape approximately 2” wide.

Cut strips

You want to cut strips of varying widths from 1” wide up to 3” wide. You can start with long strips, or find shorter strips in your scrap bin.

Step 2
Attach Strips

Line one strip along one side of the center polygon. Sew right sides together with ¼” seam allowance. Press.

Make a straight edge by trimming the strip along the next edge of the inner polygon shape.

Attach another strip, sewing right sides together. Press.

Repeat, turning and sewing strips until you have a pieced block that is larger than your final block size.

Step 3
Trim

Trim to your final block size. Use trimmings in your next scrap block.

Repeat.

FAQ'S

Do I need to bring supplies?

If you have supplies already, bring them clearly labeled with your name on them. If you do not have supplies, come with an open mind and excited heart! I have enough to share.

Do I need a sewing machine?

No, you do not need to bring a sewing machine. Please let me know if you will or will not be bringing your own machine so I have space for everyone.

I've never quilted before. Is that OK?

I will be teaching the basics. You do not need to know how to sew, how to select fabrics, or how to use the tools before you arrive. This is a learning zone for everyone! Even experienced quilters walk away with a new skill.

Can I bring a friend?

Yes! Please bring someone to enjoy the workshop with you! Learning is more fun with a friend.

I love helping people try new creative things.

And tea. I love trying new tea.
